Joining ATLA

ATLA membership is intended for qualified teachers of lipreading only. Membership is not open to the general public.

ATLA is the only professional association for lipreading teachers in the world - and as such it is at the leading edge of teaching lipreading.

ATLA members must have completed a recognised lipreading teacher training programme. ATLA members subscribe to a Code of Ethics and agree to undertake professional development to maintain teaching standards. Members have access to:

  • a bi-annual magazine
  • a bi-annual newsletter
  • three training days per year
  • regional group meetings and events
  • a dedicated web-area for members
  • an online site for the sharing of teaching materials and best practice

Always ask if your lipreading teacher is a member of ATLA.

The fees received from ATLA membership together with donations, enable ATLA:

  • to continue to develop the teaching of lipreading
  • to support the training of new lipreading teachers
  • to promote the benefits of lipreading for adults with an acquired hearing loss.

Newsflash

The RNID will be carrying out a research project into the provision of lipreading classes across England and Wales.

The project is being run in conjunction with ATLA, Hearing Concern LINK and UKCoD.

The project will be carried out in May/June 2010 and aims to look at lipreading class provision as a whole - including classes taught by ATLA members and other classes - to gain as accurate and complete a picture as possible.

The data collected will be used to inform the campaign for lipreading classes in England and Wales.

The RNID in Scotland has already carried out some research into lipreading class provision and thus Scotland is not included in this research project.

A new section on the campaign and research is available for ATLA members - simply log in for access.
