Foreword by Sue Gaston, Course Co-ordinator Faculty of Deaf Education and Learning Support City Lit London.
Teaching lipreading is a wonderful and varied occupation which, at first sight, may look easy, but is often complex and demanding. At times you may have to be a bit of a juggler, diplomat, negotiator, counsellor, IT expert and even electrician.... and that is before you start on the teaching. Not everyone is suitable. At interview we look for candidates who have:
- a clear speaking voice with natural speech patterns
- confidence in speaking and writing English
- the ability to understand and apply the work of the course – ie the equivalent of working at first year undergraduate level
- an empathic appreciation of the special needs of the deafened adult.
We also look for the kind of personality which can enthuse others and empower them to make the most of their abilities and the support that is available.
An open-minded approach and a good sense of humour are valuable too.
Whilst no formal academic qualifications are necessary, the equivalent of level 2 qualifications in English, Maths and IT are required to gain qualified teacher status.
