Communication Tactics Leaflet

Basic Tactics to Improve Communication

This leaflet was written many years ago, though its wisdom remains the same as it ever did, and never gets out of date.

The leafet offers ‘constructive’ advice about how peole with hearing loss can be enabled to use their listening & lipreading skills to ‘join in’/ to participate in whatever is going on, to ensure ‘inclusion’ rather than the sometimes inevitable ‘exclusion’.

It was written from the perspective of the deafened or hard of hearing person, not to ‘preach’ to hearing/unaware members of the public, family members, members of committees or groups but to inform them about basic common sense tactics that can be adapted to most situations.

The leaflets can be used to inform hearing people how to support and improve communication.

This leaflet hopefully motivates the hearing person to want to help, and empowers them to do it constructively without being patronising. It has the two-fold effect of also informing of the consequences of NOT doing certain things they should be doing.

You can download the leaflet free-of-charge as a non-printing pdf document: members can access an printable version of the pdf document from the Members Downloads area which can be printed/copied for use in lipreading classes only.

Newsflash

The RNID will be carrying out a research project into the provision of lipreading classes across England and Wales.

The project is being run in conjunction with ATLA, Hearing Concern LINK and UKCoD.

The project will be carried out in May/June 2010 and aims to look at lipreading class provision as a whole - including classes taught by ATLA members and other classes - to gain as accurate and complete a picture as possible.

The data collected will be used to inform the campaign for lipreading classes in England and Wales.

The RNID in Scotland has already carried out some research into lipreading class provision and thus Scotland is not included in this research project.

A new section on the campaign and research is available for ATLA members - simply log in for access.
