Finding a Lipreading Class

All ATLA-listed classes taught by ATLA-registered lipreading teachers are taught by professional teachers who have completed a recognised lipreading teacher training course, subscribe to a code of ethics, and have agreed to maintain their professional development through networking and training days. Always ask if the teacher is a member of ATLA.

ATLA maintains a list of lipreading classes in the UK and elsewhere that are taught by ATLA members - see Lipreading Classes from the Main Menu on the left-hand side. Although we try to keep our class information as up-to-date as possible, we are dependent on our members informing us of changes to classes. We strongly recommend checking that a class is running before attending the venue.

Private One-to-One Lipreading Classes

Some lipreading teachers do offer private lipreading classes on a one-to-one basis. One-to-one teaching is very intensive. Lipreading teachers offering such classes have additional expenses and considerations to take into account, such as third party and liability insurance, personal safety, etc. ATLA maintains a list of members who undertake one-to-one work. Please Contact Us for more information.

Most private lipreading classes will be between 1 and 1.5 hours long, and cost from £20.00 - £30.00 per hour. Classes can be tailored to meet your individual needs including specific family and work vocabulary, and information on assistive equipment to help you overcome barriers to access and communication.

Can't find a suitable class?

If you can't find a suitable class on these pages, then do Contact Us. It maybe that we are aware of a lipreading teacher in that area who is a member of ATLA, but who has not supplied us with class information.

Newsflash

The RNID will be carrying out a research project into the provision of lipreading classes across England and Wales.

The project is being run in conjunction with ATLA, Hearing Concern LINK and UKCoD.

The project will be carried out in May/June 2010 and aims to look at lipreading class provision as a whole - including classes taught by ATLA members and other classes - to gain as accurate and complete a picture as possible.

The data collected will be used to inform the campaign for lipreading classes in England and Wales.

The RNID in Scotland has already carried out some research into lipreading class provision and thus Scotland is not included in this research project.

A new section on the campaign and research is available for ATLA members - simply log in for access.
