The City Lit - Centre for Deaf People Training Service

Course Information

The aim of this course is for students to become qualified to teach lipreading to adults with an acquired hearing loss.Successful students will be able to organise and teach classes in lipreading and use their knowledge and understanding of deafness to give helpful guidance to hard of hearing people.

The course is in two parts. Students will work towards a City Lit Certificate in the theory and practice of teaching lipreading, and the City & Guilds 7407 Stage 1 Certificate in Further Education Teaching. Both aspects of the course are based on continuous assessment and an end of course final teaching assessment with an external assessor.

Acceptance on the course is by interview. To register your interest, please complete an application form and we will contact you in due course with further details. To obtain an application form, please contact the Course Administrator at the address given below.

It is anticipated that the next course will commence in Spring 2006 and run for 4 terms.

Entry to the course

There are no formal entry requirements, but candidates will:

  • have a clear speaking voice
  • be lipreadable
  • be empathetic to the needs of adults with an acquired hearing loss
  • be able to use English confidently and accurately in both written and spoken forms
  • visit at least five lipreading classes prior to interview

Method of study

The course runs for four terms and involves lecture blocks and some Saturdays at The City Lit during this period. Practical teaching and observation take place either at The City Lit or in locations near the students' homes. Students are linked with Support Tutors in their own areas, and/or The City Lit, as organised by the Course Coordinator. Students may have to travel over some distance.

Acceptance on the course is subject to a suitably qualified Support Tutor being available in the area of the applying student and recruitment of sufficient numbers of students on the course.

Course Requirements

  1. A course of lectures at The City Lit in London as notified.
  2. Minimum of 68 hours observation with support tutors. Minimum of 30 hours observation with other tutors. Minimum of 20 hours teaching practice. Minimum of 15 hours tutorial with support tutor. Total = approx. 120 hours which averages about 4 hours per week over 3 terms of 10 weeks. (NB. This figure includes observation and teaching practice time only).
  3. Approximately 20 written assignments based on the course lecture work.

The present fee is £1100.00. The City & Guilds 7407 Stage 1 Certificate is not included (approx. £30).
