Certificate in Teaching Speechreading (lipreading) to Adults

 

Course Information

The aim of this course is for students to become qualified to teach lipreading to adults with an acquired hearing loss. Successful students will be able to organise and teach classes in lipreading and use their knowledge and understanding of deafness to give helpful guidance to hard of hearing people.

The course is delivered in 3 modules:

  • GT102: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector - City & Guilds 7303
  • GT103: Planning and Enabling Learning (Lipreading) – City & Guilds 7304/5
  • GT104: Lipreading Specialist Unit – City Lit Certificate

Students must achieve all 3 modules in order to gain the Certificate in Teaching Lipreading to Adults

All aspects of the course are based on continuous assessment and an end of course final teaching assessment with an external assessor.

Acceptance on the course is by interview.

Newsflash

The RNID will be carrying out a research project into the provision of lipreading classes across England and Wales.

The project is being run in conjunction with ATLA, Hearing Concern LINK and UKCoD.

The project will be carried out in May/June 2010 and aims to look at lipreading class provision as a whole - including classes taught by ATLA members and other classes - to gain as accurate and complete a picture as possible.

The data collected will be used to inform the campaign for lipreading classes in England and Wales.

The RNID in Scotland has already carried out some research into lipreading class provision and thus Scotland is not included in this research project.
