The City Lit Centre for Deaf People Training Service
Certificate in Teaching Speechreading (lipreading) to Adults
Course Information
The aim of this course is for students to become qualified to teach lipreading to adults with an acquired hearing loss. Successful students will be able to organise and teach classes in lipreading and use their knowledge and understanding of deafness to give helpful guidance to hard of hearing people.
The course is delivered in 3 modules:
- GT102: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector - City & Guilds 7303
- GT103: Planning and Enabling Learning (Lipreading) – City & Guilds 7304/5
- GT104: Lipreading Specialist Unit – City Lit Certificate
Students must achieve all 3 modules in order to gain the Certificate in Teaching Lipreading to Adults
All aspects of the course are based on continuous assessment and an end of course final teaching assessment with an external assessor.
Acceptance on the course is by interview.

It is anticipated that the next course will commence in Spring 2010 and run for 4 terms.
Entry to the course
There are no formal entry requirements, but candidates will:
- have a clear speaking voice
- be lipreadable
- be empathetic to the needs of adults with an acquired hearing loss
- be able to use English confidently and accurately in both written and spoken forms
- visit at least five lipreading classes prior to interview

Method of study
The course runs for four terms and involves lecture blocks and some Saturdays or weekends at The City Lit during this period.
Practical teaching and observation take place either at The City Lit or in locations near the students' homes.
Students are linked with Support Tutors in their own areas, and/or The City Lit, as organised by the Course Coordinator.
Students may have to travel over some distance.
Acceptance on the course is subject to a suitably qualified Support Tutor being available in the area of the applying student and recruitment of sufficient numbers of students on the course.
Course Requirements
- A course of lectures at The City Lit in London as notified.
- Minimum of 68 hours observation with support tutors. Minimum of 30 hours observation with other tutors. Minimum of 20 hours teaching practice. Minimum of 15 hours tutorial with mentor. (NB. This figure includes observation and teaching practice time only).
- Approximately 22 written assignments based on the course lecture work.
Funding
If you require funding for the course, we advise you to start enquiries well in advance of the commencement of the course. There is no need to wait until an offer of a place has been made. Students who are sponsored by their Local Education Authority or other body and who wish us to invoice them for the fees must obtain a letter from the sponsor requesting City Lit to invoice them. If we do not receive a letter of authorisation, the student will be responsible for the fees.
