Lipreading classes to remain free in Derbyshire

E-mail Print PDF
Derbyshire County Council has announced that despite an overall increase to the costs for adult education classes, lipreading class provision will remain free.

ATLA congratulates DCC on this decision, which demonstrates their understanding of the unique nature and importance of lipreading classes for those with an acquired hearing loss.

DCC was one of very few councils to be designated as an example of good practice in the RNID report 'Read My Lips' in 2010 which was undertaken in collaboration with ATLA and Hearing LINK.

Sacred Heart Lipreading Class

A big thank you to the lipreading class at the Sacred Heart in Preston who raised £150 through contributions to the 'coffee fund' at their lipreading class.

They wish to donate this to the ATLA teacher training fund.

We are extemely grateful to them for this. We do get called upon to assist people with the costs of lipreading teacher training and carefully consider each request on its merits. We can only provide bursaries where we have sufficient funds to do so.

A donation of £50 was received from Anita Cooper for the training for future lipreading teachers.

The donation was made up of funds from refreshment of her lipreading classes and also Anita's selling of cards.

This gift is the first contribution this year towards the fund for future lipreading teachers which awards grants to trainee lipreading teachers studying ATLA endorsed qualifications.
